Θ 2008 OLYMPICS
ICT deplores the
decision by the International Olympic Committee to award the
2008 Olympic Summer Games to China, a communist state that
is acknowledged around the world to be a gross violator of
human rights.
The goal of the Olympic movement is to build a peaceful and
better world and promote international understanding by
educating the youth of the world through sport and culture.
ICT will therefore actively oppose any attempt by China to
misuse the Games or its athletes to falsify the relationship
between China and Tibet or appropriate what is Tibetan and
portray it as "Chinese." |

-His Holiness the Dalai

If I
couldn’t celebrate my 70th birthday in Lhasa, it will just

A new report on the state of human

argues that the absence of the rule of law in Asia "in varying
degrees obstructs the realisation of human rights". The report
focuses only on Asian states that have ratified the UN International

not deliver a detailed analysis of China, which still refuses to
incorporate the Covenant into its national law.

LAHSA-GOLMUD RAILWAY
China's Controversial Railway in Tibet.........Construction of a major railway
link between Golmud and Lhasa began in July 2001, bringing with it
the prospect of vast economic exploitation, environmental damage,
and demographic upheaval.
Stretching 1118 km (685 mi) from
Golmud in Amdo (Ch: Qinghai province) to Lhasa, the railway is
scheduled for completion in 2007, in time for the Beijing Olympics.
In the coming years, many more will be needed to construct the
dozens of bridges, tunnels and stations along the way.The railway
will increase China's ability to project military power over the
Himalayas, and it will promote a key political aim of assimilating
Tibet into the Chinese state.

HH PANCHEN LAMA
Gedhun Choekyi Nyima,
the 11th Panchen
Lama

On 17 May 1995, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the six year-old boy
identified by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen
Lama, disappeared. Suspicions that
he had been kidnapped were confirmed in 1996, when the Chinese
government admitted to holding the boy and his family in
"protective custody." He has now been missing for 10
years.

POLITICAL PRISONER
Revered Tibetan Lama Arrested in Eastern Tibet, April 18th,
2002.
Chinese authorities arrested Ven. Tenzin Delek Rinpoche in eastern
Tibet on April 7, 2002, charging him with involvement in bomb blasts
in Chengdu and Beijing.
According to the Office of Tibet,
New York, Ven. Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was arrested with four of his
attendants.

Circumstances surrounding this case indicate that the prosecution of
Tenzin Delek Rinpoche is politically motivated. He built
monasteries, schools and homes for the elderly in his community in
eastern Tibet. His leadership outside the Communist Party made him a
political target. To date, the Chinese authorities have not produced
any credible evidence of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche's involvement in the
explosions, and the prosecutions have not met minimum standards of
due process. A smuggled tape made by Tenzin Delek Rinpoche asserted,
"Whatever the authorities do and say, I am innocent."
The International Campaign for Tibet calls for the immediate release
of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche and urges governments to explicitly raise
his case and that of other Tibetan political prisoners with the
Chinese authorities.

Θ How
many Polar Bears does it take to change a light bulb?
Well, if we don't
start changing lightbulbs to compact fluorescents - and take
some other simple measures to help stop the earth from getting
warmer, there aren't going to be any Polar Bears. They depend on
great sheets of ice - or floes- which are melting because of
emissions from the fossils fuels we burn. Their habitat, the Arctic,
is warming almost twice as fast as the rest of the world, with
significant impacts apparent right now. Scientists say that average
winter temperatures have increased as much as 7 degrees Fahrenheit
in the past 50 years. The Polar Bears are drowning in increasing
numbers because the ice floes that they depend on for survival are
getting fewer and farther between.
You can do something about it. You can get others to
join the Stop Global Warming Virtual March.
